"The man is the first weapon of battle; let us then study the soldier in battle, for it is he who brings reality to it. Only study of the past can give us a sense of reality and show us how a soldier will fight in the future."
Colonel Charles-Ardant du Picq (1821-1879)
A One-Day Tour would normally include:
- Pegasus Bridge. The first major action of D-Day. A daring "coup de main" assault by glider borne troops on vital bridges over waterways between Caen and the sea.
- Ranville Military Cemetery. One of 18 British Commonwealth War Cemeteries in Lower Normandy. The Poignant final resting place of 2562 British, Canadian, Australian and Belgian mostly airborne soldiers.
- The Atlantic Wall Museum. A fully equipped German Artillery Command and Observation Bunker. Probably the most complete still in existence.
- SWORD Beach and Inland. The start of the doomed attempt by the 3rd British Infantry Division to capture Caen on D-Day.
- HILLMAN Fort. A spectacularly positioned and important German Regimental Command Headquarters.
- JUNO Beach. Probably the most complex of the landing beaches. The Canadian landings were costly and yet they made the greatest penetration of any of the allied division on D-Day. Thereafter, proportionately they suffered the most casualties.
- GOLD Beach and inland with The Green Howards and Sergeant Major Stan Hollis VC. The story of the only soldier to be awarded the Victoria Cross on D-Day. General Hollands met him first in 1975.
- The Artificial Harbour at Arromanches or MULBERRY. This prefabricated harbour, bigger than Dover harbour, was built in secret, towed across the English Channel and constructed in eleven days. The remains are still evident. A remarkable tale of engineering ingenuity, leadership and resolve.
- The German Gun Battery at Longues sur Mer. The most complete remaining installation of the much vaunted German "Atlantic Wall" with the guns still in place. A
Two-Day Tour would also include:
- Operation GOODWOOD. The attempted Breakout in the East. One of the most controversial episodes of the Battle for Normandy.
OR
- Operation EPSOM. The attempt to encircle and capture Caen from the West.
- Hill 112. This has been likened to the Verdun of Normandy.
- Falaise Pocket. The final defeat of the German Armies in Normandy
A Canadian Specific Tour could also include:
- Canadian Airborne Forces with the 6 Airborne Division including the destruction of the Dives River Bridges.
- JUNO Beach and Inland - In much more detail than on a one day tour, focusing on the actions of the three first wave Brigades.
- Visit to the JUNO Beach Centre. A museum and exhibition Center dedicated to the Canadian contribution to the allied war effort and Canada today.
- Abbey des Ardennes. The scene of the massacre of Canadian soldiers by the 12 SS Division.
- Operation TOTALIZE/TRACTABLE/SPRING. The prelude to the closing of the Falaise Pocket.
- The Falaise Pocket and Major Currie VC.
